Alternative and Incarcerated Education
New York State alternative education provides options for students who are at risk of dropping out of school to remain engaged in an alternative learning environment that focuses on their particular skills, abilities, and learning styles. For decades, alternative education programs have provided additional pathways for students to complete their secondary education and transition to post- secondary or career opportunities
Programs
The Office of Student Support Services is responsible for three alternative education programs that serve at-risk youths. These are:
- Alternative High School Equivalency Preparation Program (AHSEP), which enables high school students who are at risk of not completing graduation requirements for a high school diploma to prepare for and earn their high school equivalency diploma through the .
- Alternative Transition Program (ATP), which helps students who are at risk of dropping out of school to transition back into a regular school setting, which may include an AHSEP program.
- Education of Incarcerated Youth Program (IY), which provides educational instruction and services to youth in correctional facilities who have not received a high school diploma.
